I was thrilled to be a finalist back in September 2024 for the Noosa Art Prize. I had submitted this painted titled "Sunset Drive" based on an image I had taken from a hotel on the Gold Coast, looking down over the river.

In this image, I wanted to focus on the tiny car that had been driving along the street, almost facing the opposite way to the glorious sunset. I was interested in showing how much of life is what we pay attention to, and much of life (such as a glorious sunset) can pass us by while we're busily doing our own thing.

Although this sentiment might appear a bit defeatist at first brush, it's actually quite comforting to know that there is plenty to see and be part of, if we just take the time to notice.

A car with headlights drives along a suburban road at night. Dark palm trees and a house are visible in the background.
Close up detail of the little car in the "Sunset Drive" painting. I use fluid acrylics over the top of thicker heavy body acrylics to achieve a smoother finish. As this top layer is thinner, often parts of the lower layers can be seen beneath.
